Ralph Lister

British voice and clearly different characters.

Profile checked November 2026. Style notes draw on the linked reviews and sources; they are not a claim that we have heard every recording.

Ralph Lister is a British actor and audiobook narrator known in progression fantasy for Mage Errant. His other recordings include The Bellwether Revivals (2012) and the 2023 edition of Shōgun, Part One. His work covers fantasy, historical stories and novels about troubled relationships.

Reviews quoted on his site praise clear character changes and controlled pacing. In The Flint Heart, Publishers Weekly describes a low, rough voice for an ancient tribesman and bright, curious voices for the children. A timid hot-water bottle gains confidence as the story develops. These are specific examples of his use of voice to show personality.

He may suit listeners who enjoy British narration and characters with clearly different voices. If you prefer everyone to sound close to the narrator’s main voice, try a sample first. His recording of The Flint Heart was an Audie finalist in 2012.

Where to try this voice

Choose the Publisher’s Pack preview rather than a later book. The pack contains the first two novels, so one purchase starts the story in order. Listen for whether Hugh’s dialogue and the surrounding narration are easy to follow. The next purchase is A Traitor in Skyhold, book 3.
